Traditional Microneedling vs. Potenza RF Microneedling

Traditional microneedling and Potenza RF microneedling are two modalities of microneedling that yield many skin enhancing benefits. While both are go-to treatments for smoother, firmer, and more youthful looking skin, there are key differences between the two technologies that may make one option better for you.

Traditional Microneedling
This treatment involves using a pen device with fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny channels stimulate the body’s natural healing response, boosting new collagen and elastin production. Popular regular microneedling devices include Dr. Pen, SkinPen, RejuvaPen, Collagen PIN, Dermapen among many others.

Benefits include:

  • Firmer skin

  • Smoother skin texture

  • Improvement of hyperpigmentation or spots

  • Reduction of fine lines

  • Pore reduction

  • Subtle skin rejuvenation

This treatment has minimal downtime. Once the skin is healed, patients see a noticeable difference in their skin as a result of fresh collagen stimulation.

Potenza RF Microneedling

While regular microneedling devices improve skin texture, uneven skin tone, and firmness, the powerful combination of microneedling AND radiofrequency allows Potenza to lift and tighten the skin in ways that regular microneedling can not do.

In addition to creating micro-injuries, it delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis through the needles. This thermal energy tightens existing collagen fibers while also stimulating new collagen and elastin growth. The result: firmer, tighter, and lifted skin. The combination makes it particularly effective for more advanced skin concerns such as skin laxity, deeper wrinkles, and acne scarring.

Additionally, Potenza can reach a depth of 4 mm into the skin if the patient’s goal is to melt stubborn fat in unwanted areas such as the submentum (double chin) whereas most regular microneedling pens have a maximum depth of 2.5 mm.

Which Is Right for You?

  • If you’re new to collagen induction therapy and want a gentler entry point for treating fine lines, mild scars, or uneven tone, traditional microneedling is a great choice.

  • If you’re looking to address sagging skin, deeper wrinkles, or more advanced texture concerns, RF microneedling may deliver more dramatic, longer-lasting results.

Both treatments are minimally invasive and safe for most skin types. The right option depends on your skin goals, downtime tolerance, and treatment plan recommended by your provider.

While pen microneedling is a great introductory treatment for beginners who have mild skin concerns, Potenza is a powerful workhorse for anti-aging and ultimate skin rejuvenation.
